Notes from tonight's VSB Meeting
Tonight the VSB Trustees, along with Committees II/III, met to listen to delegates' presentations against the possible closure to close Garibaldi. There were eight or nine delegates, covering many aspects of why Garibaldi should stay open. The Trustees decided to amend the motion to allow for the school to stay open if a viable plan to make the school work financially is produced by the end of the 2008 March break. I'll follow up with more details and comments in my next post.

Hi Scott a slight modificatoin...there were a total of 11 delegates representing Garibaldi
I just read all the trustee bios on the vsb website. Sharon gregson, Allen Blakey, Allan Wong, Eleanor Gregson seem to be very "pro-education." I think we definitely have a chance. Frog Hollow is going to be key, and a mulit-use facility plan I think is essential. Now, who from the Ministry of Children and Family can be our liaison?
I felt that the parents gain something last night as there is a second motion introduced.
However, I am still confused that why the parents (aside from FrogHollow) are the only main stakeholders that have to scramble the last minutes to come up with something "creative".
Obviously, we parents need more involvement/feedback from the union, teachers, schoolboard, private enterprises, community; how to define scope, goal, data, who doing what, which doors to knock, what process the parents have to go through, whom from the board can be of assisstance and so on...Besides that, we parents still have to earn a paycheck to feed our families. Three months are not a lot of time to come up with this kind of a project; It took me more more than three months to research and decide between a plasma and LCD tv. Why do the parents have to do "something" and "they" dont? Heck, let the parents do their jobs full time, it will save the school a lot of money.
Reading over the letter from Chris Kelly to the VSB staff, the bottom line, they want to trim down their spending. It's all about budgeting, money and nothing about the people.
The population from 5-9 years old is 190 as 2006, less 40 attending Garibaldi, that leaves 150 student for another schools, including Nelson, Lord and Begbie. That is a huge loss.
Sorry for the rant - I just have to put all the frustration out here. Thanks the hi-tech god for blogging!

Tuyen - You raise some strong concerns and obstacles to overcome. We will have to get as much clarification from the board as possible. Scott suggested proposing an additional amendment for Monday’s vote to define some criteria or metric through which trustees can apply their vote rather than mere political will. Another short deadline I’m afraid.
